ADVANCE STAFF WRITER City Councilman Andrew Lanza is aiming for Albany, and yesterday he took time to thank the Staten Islanders who are hoping he gets there. For about an hour last night, Lanza shook hands and shared ideas with about 60 of his supporters who are endorsing his effort to replace retiring GOP state Sen. John Marchi. I haven't been able to accomplish a single thing without you, Lanza (R-South Shore) told the cheering crowd gathered at the corner of Lenevar and Ramona avenues in front of Bloomingdale Park. Lanza, a Great Kills resident, cited the inception of a fourth precinct and curbing overdevelopment with sweeping comprehensive downzoning applications as some of his accomplishments while serving as councilman. He also noted his staunch opposition to NASCAR's proposal to build a racetrack in Bloomfield and the creation of the $12 million, 28-acre Owl Hollow Fields soccer complex slated to be built in Arden Heights. Lanza, who has been endorsed by the GOP executive committee, is being opposed tonight before the party's county committee by attorney Robert Helbock. The Democratic nominee is attorney Matthew Titone. I'm truly excited to bring my experience, passion and energy to Albany, said Lanza. His backers -- including more than 35 civic leaders -- are also excited at the prospect of Lanza being a state senator. For John Antoniello, chairman of Community Board 3, Lanza is the easy and obvious choice. I think he's done outstanding things for the South Shore and he'll do great things in Albany. |
